How to Measure Your Vent
One rule, four steps, about five minutes with a tape measure. Get the size right the first time — no returns, no gaps, no guesswork.
Four steps to your size
You'll need: a tape measure · a screwdriver (wall and ceiling vents) · somewhere to write two numbers
Remove the old cover
Floor registers lift straight out. Wall and ceiling covers are held by two to four screws — back them out and set the cover aside.
Keep the old cover until your new vent is installed, so your duct isn't left open.
Measure the duct opening
Measure the hole itself, inside edge to inside edge: width first, then height. Write both numbers down.
Then measure again. A second pass takes ten seconds and catches most ordering mistakes.
Round to the nearest standard size
Duct openings are built to whole-inch sizes, but drywall and flooring rarely leave a perfectly crisp edge. Round each number to the nearest standard size: 9¾" is a 10" opening, 5⅞" is a 6" opening.
Match it to your Green Vent size
Green Vent covers are named after the duct opening they fit: a 10x8 cover fits a 10" × 8" opening. The insert sits inside the duct and the frame overlaps the surrounding surface, so the rough edge disappears.

If a measurement lands close to the half-inch mark (for example 9½"), it usually means the opening was cut oversize. Check the duct itself — the metal boot inside the opening — and use that dimension.
Find your size
Find your width across the top and your height down the side — the cell where they meet is your size.

A few cases worth knowing
Supply register or return grille?
Hold a sheet of paper to the vent while your system runs. If the paper blows away, it's a supply register (it may have a damper to control airflow). If the paper sticks, it's a return — return grilles have no damper and come in larger sizes. The measuring method is the same for both.
Linear slot diffusers
For linear slot diffusers, measure the length of the slot opening and its width the same way: the cut opening, not any existing trim or frame.
Floor vents in tile or hardwood
Measure the opening in the finished floor surface, not the subfloor beneath it. If the flooring was installed after the duct, the two can differ by ¼" or more.
Three mistakes that cause returns
Common questions
My opening measures 9¾" × 3¾". What size do I order?
That's a 10" × 4" duct opening — order a 10x4. Openings are cut to whole-inch sizes; the small shortfall is normal drywall or flooring variance.
Is the size on the box the opening size or the overall size?
The opening size. A Green Vent 10x8 fits a 10" × 8" duct opening. The overall faceplate is larger so it overlaps the surrounding wall, ceiling, or floor — exact overall dimensions are listed on each product page.
Does width-versus-height order matter?
For airflow it doesn't, but for looks it can: on directional designs the louvers follow the first dimension. Note which side is horizontal in your room before ordering.
What if my size isn't in the chart?

Do I measure differently for wall, ceiling, or floor?
