Questions

Do I really need to drill?

Yes — it mounts to the wall and needs four pilot holes so the screws hold and the wall doesn't crack.

Can I paint it first?

Yes. If you're painting, do it before you mount the diffuser.

Which way does the air go?

The slots set the throw. Aim it away from windows, toward the center of the room.
